Hank Mitchell Memorial Trophy
Hank Mitchell
Hank was raised in a house at near 13th and Main and as a teenager made money caddying at Shaughnessy Heights. He worked for transit driving a tram, streetcar and finally a bus. He was described by Arv Olsen in Backspin as a humble public course player playing mostly at Langara. Hank retired at 55 and seriously started senior golfing in 1970. He was a member of the Club for 50 years and played Langara every day except Sunday. In 1971 at Caughnawaga, Que. Mitchell won the Canadian Senior Championship. He also won the B.C. Golf Association Seniors Championship, the B.C. Seniors Association title and the Langara Club Championship in 1971. He was the first recipient of the current Seniors Championship trophy in 1962. Hank won this event again in 1968. In 1985 months before his fatal third heart attack, Mitchell scored his third hole in one, at Langara’s 13th hole and shot his age for the first time (a 70 at Langara).
The Hank Mitchell trophy and competition is now a two man best ball event held each year in honour of a long time Langara legend. The event started in 1986 as an individual competition with winners for low gross and low net. In 2000 the event was reinstated as a best ball 2 ball event.
